Quick updates: a work breakdown

It's time to instill some direction and finality to these last stages of completion.
I'm going to create and post an itemized list and then we'll all know where I'm at cause I'm sure it would show some promise for a rather obscure deadline.

I had some fun making a really cool boss fight at the end, but the VFX are being a piece of s-h, they just simply refuse to delay the sounds and end the visuals when I specify. Just another bug in this piss poor toolset. I honestly want to create one sequel to this project, but I can honestly say if I do/do not, I will never buy this atari quality garbage ever again. I can count probably.... 20 or so weekends I spent screwing around with 1 buggy thing, or making work arounds etc, and I'm now fairly convinced my project should have been very close to the 6 months I originally estimated.

Ah, once again I modded heavily for one day and my eyes are absolutely killing me. I can't pick up a laptop for 2 minutes to type this without immediate constant pain. There must be something really wrong with my orbs when it comes to view digital screens. I'm ok for three hoursish a day, once I try to push it I can't do anything computer related for a week or more. It's like the cords are snapping off behind them. Ironically I have VERY good ergonomics and sit back about a full foot farther than most do, if not more. I can also see fine print VERY well. It just hurts when I do it too long.

I need to focus on schoolwork anyway for the weekdays but I can't look at computers there either.

  1. Hi Eguintir,

    The new "paper" background to your blog is excellent! I wanted to do the same effect (like a scroll), but did not know how to do it and is why I settled for the colour I did. Have they made the process easier? Is it straight forward?

    Anyway, re: aching eyes. I had a similar problem to you many years ago and can still have that problem if I overdo it. (I even have the medical notes in front of me that say it first happened in Sep-Nov 1994. I was 28 at the time. They said it was "Vertical diplopia".) Ever since then, I cannot look at the computer for more than an hour or two at a time without getting aching eyeballs that lead to severe headaches. Problem is, I also have other problems that when they all come together mean I can be made unwell for a few days at a time. I would strongly recommend reducing your time to prevent this from happening, otherwise you may do some permanent damage, especially as you get older (on the assumption you are younger than me?).

    I know the toolset can be frustrating, but I have learned to treat it as a gentle past-time rather than an exercise in producing something in a given time. If you set yourself a too tight deadline, then you are placing pressure on yourself that will turn into frustration when the toolset does not comply with your own target. ;)

    The other trick is to make sure you share your problems and answers with other builders. Hey! You even help solve one of my problems with sitting NPCs! I was trying all sorts of things and decided to put it to one side and ask my fello builders. You and Shaughn came back with teh answer I needed withoin a very short time and saved me hours of frustration and work.

    I am not saying we shall get all the answers, but I am saying don't worry about your deadline, but make sure you do keep at it and do not burn yourself out in the process of trying, like so many others do. Otherwise, it will make all the work you have done end in a non release, which would be sad for everybody.

    My biggest problem at the moment is that my area designs really suck. I have asked for help in the past and am still asking. I have considered using prefabs, but I am trying to avoid "repitition" if they are used by other builders.

    So, it is better to do a couple of hours everyday and at a steady pace, rather than many hours one day and have retina burnout for the rest of the week. Makes sense really. :)

    Take care!
    Lance.

  2. As my most faithful blog reader I took the time to look up a few things.

    #1 go into lay out end "Edit HTML" for your blog. The first couple fields say Variable = or something right past them there is a place called body { like so:

    body {
    background-image: url("http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/7658/seamlessparch.jpg");
    ***
    ***
    }
    except yours wont have the background-image: url line. Thats what did it for me. So upload your texture to imageshack.us or whatever and add that line, of course replacing inside the quotes with your url. It's done, and will produce a repeating full page fill. Now take your time find a great texture (you may have to reduce the contrast a lot so its not too dark to put text over as I did).

    As for the eye thing, ya I guess it is worse now. I used to use the computer a lot for a living and while my eyes got tired there was no permanent pain. My theory is although looking at a computer screen may or may not harm your vision accuracy, it certainly gets your muscles to "Settle in" at a fixed distance, because my sight is now unable to "flex" well to adjust for long or short. The pain... who knows. I knew not to overdue it but unfortunately my computer clock was off 3 hours and i thought I had only modded 4 hours and not 7 lol. Ouch. Last time it cost me 2 weeks this time hopefully just 1.

  3. The paper looks nice, but it's hard for my readability. Anyway, I know your work will be done soon. So here's hoping for no big bugs!

  4. Hi Eguintir,

    Thanks for that info on the background paper. I will have to try that at some time. I have a background image in mind alreay and if it looks good, will make the change. If readers are OK with it, I will stick with it. Although, I have just checked and it only has this with espect to body:

    body {
    background:$bgcolor;
    margin:0;
    color:$textcolor;
    font:x-small Georgia Serif;
    font-size/* */:/**/small;
    font-size: /**/small;
    text-align: center;
    }

    Is there a simple way to redirect the background image to an url nowadays? Last time I checked, I could not find a button or anything, but maybe there is now? I am a bit scared of editing this without the text looking like yours at this time. I may try fidling around with the blog a bit more to see if things have changed since last I looked at trying to do this.

    My eyes have had trouble "flexing" in the last 2 - 3 years as well. I now have to take my glasses off (I'm short sighted) to look at things that are close to me. I never used to have to do this. I don't think it is just using the computer, but that "change in life" for me. ;)

  5. Replace your entire background: ..... ; line with the first line of mine, again from the background: to the ;

    Its a line for line swap after the first opening bracket. There is no other way and it works fine. We are simply replacing the background with a picture command instead of a colour one. In my blog my first line looks like 2 but its just wrapping, so copy to the ; and copy it over

  7. Hi,

    Finally got around to adding an image to my blog background!

    It seems to come across quite well. What do you think?

    Thanks for the information.
